Osman III
Encyclopedia Article
Osman III (1699-1757), Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1754-1757). He was the son of Sultan Mustafa II. He succeeded his brother, Sultan Mahmud I, having spent most of his life a prisoner in the harem. Consequently, he was most remarkable for his personality quirks: he had all music banned from the palace and avoided all female companionship, wearing iron-heeled shoes to warn of his approach so that women could avoid him. He was succeeded by Sultan Mustafa III, his cousin.
