Okayama, city in Japan on south-west Honshu, capital of Okayama Prefecture, a port on the Asahi River near the Inland Sea. It is an important commercial and manufacturing centre, whose products include stoneware, machinery, textiles, chemicals, and rubber. In the city are a 16th-century castle and Koraku Park, a famous public garden laid out in 1786. Okayama University (1949) also is here. The main growth of Okayama as an industrial centre began in the late 19th century. Population 685,564 (2008).
