Ahaggar Mountains
Encyclopedia Article
Ahaggar Mountains, also Hoggar Mountains, plateau region, southern Algeria, in the centre of the Sahara. It is an arid, rocky, upland region that rises to a maximum elevation in Mount Tahat (3,003 m/9,852 ft). On its south-western edge is the oasis town and Saharan crossroads of Tamanrasset. Cave paintings discovered in the mountains are difficult to date but were probably created over several millennia from about 6500 bc to about 1200 bc: they depict the raising of cattle and the hunting of animals that now live exclusively in sub-Saharan Africa, indicating the change of climate that has taken place since then.
