The calyx (outer floral whorl) has four parts, and the corolla (inner floral whorl) has two lips, of which the lower in some species resembles a slipper, hence its common name slipperwort. The flowers are most frequently yellow; purple ones are also fairly common. Calceolarias were introduced into floriculture about 1830 and have produced many hybrids and varieties. The plant is a perennial but is often treated as a semi-hardy or greenhouse plant in cultivation. See Figwort. Scientific classification: The genus Calceolaria belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae.
