Oceania, name used to designate the division of the globe comprising most of the islands in the Pacific Ocean. The traditional subdivisions of Oceania are Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, which are defined by geographic location and by the physical and cultural characteristics of the inhabitants. As defined by the United Nations, Oceania also includes Australia and New Zealand.
