FifeFife

Fife (musical instrument), high-pitched transverse (horizontally held) flute, historically associated with infantry troops. The fife has six finger-holes and sometimes one key; its basic pitch is usually A-flat. Its main modern use is in fife-and-drum corps and military bands. The word derives from the German Pfeife (pipe).
