Notation

Encyclopedia Article

Notation, in science or art, any system of marks or symbols used to represent entities, processes, facts, or relationships in an abbreviated or non-verbal form. See also Chemical Reaction; Musical Notation. In the arts, notation is also used in choreography (see Dance Notation) and in plotting camera or acting movement. Special symbolic vocabularies are also useful with certain games, such as chess; for diagrammatic offensive or defensive study by teams in many sports; and for military strategy. Shorthand, too, is a form of notation.

For the history of mathematical notation, see Numerals.
