Mischa Elman (1891-1967), Russian-American violinist, born in Talnoye. He made his first concert appearance in 1899. In 1902, at the urging of the noted violin teacher Leopold Auer, he entered the Conservatory of St Petersburg, studying violin under Auer. Elman made his debut in St Petersburg in 1904. He later toured in the United States, Europe, and the Orient. He became a US citizen in 1923. A masterly interpreter, he had a thorough command of technique and was noted for his feeling and beauty of tone.
