Liberec (German, Reichenberg), city in north-west Czech Republic, capital of Liberec Region, on the Lužická Nisa (Neisse) River. The principal industry is the manufacture of textiles, which has earned Liberec the nickname of the “Bohemian Manchester”. Points of interest include a 16th-century church and a 17th-century castle. The city was founded in the 14th century. Liberec was mainly a German city before and during World War II (1939-1945), but after the war it became entirely Czech. Population 99,102 (2003 estimate).
