Encyclopedia Article

Horatio Parker (1863-1919), American composer and music teacher, born in Auburndale, Massachusetts, and educated privately and at the Conservatory in Munich. He was organist and choirmaster at St Andrew's Church, New York, and at Trinity Church, Boston. In 1894 Parker became professor of music at Yale University and from 1904 until his death he served as dean of the Yale Music School. His students included the American composer Charles Ives. Parker's oratorio Hora Novissima (1893) is considered his masterpiece. It exemplifies the serious Austro-German musical tradition that was dominant among American composers of the time.
