Aden, Gulf of, western arm of the Arabian Sea, between the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and the northern coast of the Horn of Africa (Somalia and Djibouti). It is about 885 km (550 mi) long and is linked to the Red Sea by a strait, the Bab el Mandeb. The Gulf of Aden forms a part of the important commercial shipping route from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea by way of the Suez Canal.
