After years of neighbourly relations, Lot and Abraham separated and staked out individual grazing lands. Later Lot was captured in a raid on Sodom and rescued by Abraham. Subsequently, as a resident of Sodom, he was warned by angels to flee that city in the face of its impending destruction. Although warned not to look back as they fled, “Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26). Lot's daughters, bereft of male company, made their father drunk and lay with him to beget children. Their sons, Moab and Ben-ammi, were regarded as the ancestors of the Moabites and the Ammonites. Lot is often mentioned as Lut in the Koran, in which he is portrayed as a teacher of righteousness.
