Ústí nad Labem (German, Aussig), city in the north-western part of the Czech Republic, capital of Ústí nad Labem Region, on the Elbe (Labe) River. The principal industries include the manufacture of chemicals, glass, soap, pottery, metal products, and woollen and cotton goods. A sugar refinery is also located in the city, and trade is considerable there in grain, fruit, timber, mineral water, and coal. Ústí nad Labem has several Gothic and Renaissance churches. Founded in the 13th century, the city was ceded to Germany in 1938 by the Munich Pact. It was returned to Czechoslovakia in 1945. In 1993 Ústí nad Labem became part of the Czech Republic when Czechoslovakia was divided into the countries of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Population 95,436 (2003 estimate).
