Pomona, in Roman mythology, goddess of fruit trees. In the Metamorphoses of the Roman poet Ovid, who probably invented the story, Pomona received offers of love from Pan, Silvanus, Vertumnus, and others. Vertumnus, the god of gardens and changing seasons, wooed her in various forms, as a reaper, a vine-dresser, a fisherman, and a soldier. Finally, Vertumnus disguised himself as an old woman, and in this guise he was able to convince Pomona to accept him in his proper form.
