Seamus Heaney won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, becoming the first Irish writer since Samuel Beckett to gain the honour. Heaney, now resident in Dublin, was born in Northern Ireland and the troubled political situation there has been a persistent theme in his poetry, often obliquely.
