The Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the waters of the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal in northern England. The Bridgewater Canal was one of the earliest canals in England, constructed to carry coal from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley 12 km (7y mi) from Manchester. It was designed by engineer and canal-builder James Brindley. The Manchester Ship Canal runs for 58 km (36 mi) from Salford to Manchester and was the last major canal-building project in Britain.
