| The notorious Peterloo Massacre at St Peter’s Fields in Manchester on August 16, 1819, occurred when the local cavalry yeomanry attacked a peaceful radical meeting in support of political reform. The resulting casualties included nine men and two women killed, and over 400 people injured, and the magistrates had to fall back on regular troops to clear the crowd. The incident was soon dubbed the Peterloo Massacre, in a play of words on the Battle of Waterloo. |
