Merwede Canal, Netherlands

Merwede Canal, Netherlands
The Merwede Canal was built in the 19th century to improve connections for shipping. Its main function now is to control the water level in the adjoining polders (areas of reclaimed land). Although the shipping trade has diminished, the Merwede Canal is an important part of the leisure industry in the area, providing a quiet alternative to larger, busier waterways for pleasure trips.
