Throughout his career, Elliott Carter has turned to the works of American poets. This excerpt is from the chamber song cycle for tenor voice, In Sleep, In Thunder (1982), the text for which is six poems by Robert Lowell. The cycle illustrates what Carter has called “continuous but coherent change”, reflecting the shifting emotions expressed in the poems themselves. This excerpt is from the third song, “Harriet”.
