Wizard Island, shown here, is actually the top of an extinct volcano that formed in the waters of Crater Lake, located in southern Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park. The lake fills the crater of an extinct volcano, Mount Mazama, which is believed to have exploded violently about 7,700 years ago. Because of Crater Lake’s great depth, only 236 m (774 ft) of the 793-m (2,600-ft) tall volcano is visible as Wizard Island.
