Francesco Sforza

Francesco Sforza
Francesco Sforza (here depicted by an unknown artist, in a work conserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence) was captain of the forces of the duke of Milan, Filippo Maria Visconti. In 1441 he married the duke's daughter, Bianca Maria. After the death of Filippo Maria in 1447, Sforza was called to defend the newly-instated Ambrosian Republic. On 27 February, 1450, he entered Milan and was proclaimed duke. The Sforza family held control of Milan until 1535, when the town passed to Emperor Charles V of the Habsburg dynasty.
