Gregorian chant’s importance to Western music up until the 16th century was fundamental. There were three main types of chant: the reciting formulas (in which most of the text was sung to a single note), the melismatic (in which a group of notes were sung to a single syllable), and refrains sung by the choir and congregation. Most chant was sung in alternation between choir and soloist and between choruses. This choral example was sung in honour of the dead.
