Accession of Theodore Roosevelt: The Times Report
The popularity of Theodore Roosevelt following his Rough Rider’s exploits at the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War had propelled him to the vice-presidential nomination for the Republican Party in 1900. Following the assassination of President William McKinley, he became the youngest president in the history of the United States. While the substance of his politics did not diverge far from his predecessors, as reported in The Times on September 17, 1901, his style and energy infused American politics for the first two decades of the 20th century.
